Playing history

Born in Peterlee, Co. Durham, but didn't start playing until he took up the tenor horn at Caldervale High School, Airdrie, Scotland under the tutelage of Andrew Suckle [Principal Cornet of the Scottish Gas Band] in 1976. Played with his school band, Lanarkshire Concert Band, and the local Airdrie Old Union Band [now Monklands Brass] and performed in his first Scottish Championships in 1978.

Moved to Coventry where he went onto Bb bass - don't ask why - with the Coventry Festival Band [now Rolls-Royce Coventry Band]. After a couple of years moved to the Coventry Imperial Band and then by 1982 was with the City of Coventry Band [current British Open Champions]. He began playing the Eb bass is 1981 as he wished to play with the Warwickshire Symphony Orchestra. His banding highlight with City of Coventry Band was when they won the "Tetley Yorkshire Open" performing Diadem of Gold under the direction of Peter Parks.

In 1984 he moved again, this time to Bristol, where he joined the Sun Life Band, formerly Stanshawe, where he was the principal Eb bass [tuba] for over 10 years.

In 1994 he left Sun Life and began dabbling in local orchestras and with the Liberty Quintet [a small group of ex-SLB soloists]. In his spare time he obtained his Masters Degree in Engineering from the University of Warwick.

In 1997 his job took him to France, working on Airbus Industrie's "super-jumbo" (A3XX), and since that time he has not blown a note but has begun to arrange music for brass, however, the prodigal son returns to Blighty in Autumn 2000, working close to Leicester.
